2024.10.24 A Lovely Autumn

Hello, friends!

Such a fabulous weekend! Sunny, dry, and warm for late October in Maine. It seemed almost criminally illegal to spend the day inside so I took the opportunity to catch up on some autumnal chores; last mow of the season, servicing the generator, some final trimming of especially aggressive vines and bushes, cleaning up the carpet of pine needles accumulating on the deck, checking tire pressures… It’s all fairly mindless but I couldn’t help but smile and take a few moments here and there to appreciate the beauty around me.

There are many overwhelmingly beautiful places in the world (we live on an incredible planet!), and I’d count Maine among them. As friends and family know, winter is not my favorite time of year. I’m more of a spring and summer guy. There’s something about the pending loss of sun, the hibernation and torpor, that makes me long for the explosion of green and energy that comes with the spring and summer. But Maine’s natural, seasonal lighting is always special, and the golden fall light is particularly breathtaking. I love the way it works with the vibrant, changing leaves, perhaps mimicking the moon and the water, except the sun is the object and the leaves are the subject in this case.

I’ll end my poetic waxing here. Thank you for your indulgence and I hope our state’s natural beauty can give you pause and maybe bring you a smile.

Be well,

Matthew
