2024.05.16 Genealogy and the Society of Mayflower Descendants

Hello friends,

I don’t talk enough about our genealogy and local history volunteers or our impressive collection of resources on the second floor, but this past week reminded me of just how vibrant that resource is.

Michael Denney, Historian for The Society of Mayflower Descendants in Maine, visited Skidompha last Thursday, and shared information on available resources and research methods, as well as details about the society. But Michael’s generosity did not end there; imagine how surprised we were when he donated several volumes of the Mayflower “silver books” to us!

Meghan has already cataloged all of them, and with some help from Terry to make room for the additional volumes to be shelved in the correct sequence, they are ready for use. We now have a nearly complete collection, with two of the “missing” volumes containing family lines which have no current members in the Maine society. Michael is going to see if he might have another “missing” one for us as well. Thank you very much, Michael!!

The Skidompha History And Genealogy Center’s collection focuses on Lincoln County, Maine, but we also have material from other areas of Maine, New England, the US, Canada, and even other countries. Better yet, we have a number of talented and skilled genealogy volunteers available to help with your research. Please come on down with your questions and projects. They host a Genealogy Roundtable every second Thursday of the month and are available on most Thursday afternoons from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. We suggest you call ahead!

Be well,

Matthew
